Time Person of the Year 2008

President elect Barack Obama has been named the 2008 Person of the Year by Time magazine. Person of the Year (formerly Man of the Year) is an annual issue of the Time newsmagazine that features and profiles a person that “for better or for worse, …has done the most to influence the events of the year.”
According to the magazine, the tradition of selecting a Man of the Year began in 1927, with Time editors contemplating newsworthy stories possible during a slow news week.
Barack Obama, the elected 44th president of United States likely does not come as a surprise for 2008, since the person or persons who most affected the news and our lives, (for good or ill) is selected as Person of the Year by Time.
2008 runners-up included Treasury Secretary Henry Paulson, French President Nicolas Sarkozy, Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin and film director Zhang Yimou, who designed the Beijing Olympics opening ceremony.
Since the lists 1920’s beginning, every serving President of the United States has been a Person of the Year at least one time with the exceptions of Calvin Coolidge, Herbert Hoover and Gerald Ford.
Time Person of the Year 2007 was Vladimir Putin and the 2006 Time magazine Person of the Year was You (the millions of anonymous contributors of user-generated content to sites like Wikipedia, YouTube, Facebook, Digg, and others).
Las Vegas Trade Shows January 2009

While many folks are focused on getting their holiday shopping and shipping done before the end of this week, there are those that have had the additional task of getting packages shipped to Las Vegas, in preparation of conferences and trade shows taking place the first week of January. Las Vegas is the place to be for conferences in January, with megatrade shows like the Consumer Electronics Show (CES), the Adult Movie Awards & Expo (AVN), the Affiliate Summit Conference West (ASC), Wordcamp Las Vegas, and even Parker Chiropractic Seminars.

The 2009 International Consumer Electronics Show (CES) is the Mega consumer electronics event. It features keynotes from Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer, Sony Corp. Chairman and CEO Sir Howard Stringer, Ford Motor Co. President and CEO Alan Mulally, a dazzling number of tradeshow sessions, super sessions, award shows, and celebrity appearances, featuring everything related to the consumer technology industry.
Attendees can expect to see OLED (organic light emitting diode) TVs by companies like Sony and Samsung. Touchscreen netbooks are expected to be a big hit at the 2009 show, with items like Intel’s Convertible Classmate PC and new Eee PC models coming from ASUS. CES begins on Thursday, January 8, 2009 and goes through Sunday, January 11, 2009.
CES is not the only tradeshow taking place at the Sands Expo and Convention Center during these four days in January, the AVN Adult Entertainment Expo 2009 takes place on nearly an identical schedule. Featuring seminars, exhibits, industry parties, and a Saturday night awards show at the Mandalay Bay Events Center, the adult film industry will be celebrating its 26th annual bash in Las Vegas.
It’s not all web starlets and red carpet events with Jenna Haze, Belladonna and other current adult film celebrities, the industry seminars focus on issues typically facing the other industries as well. Sessions such as Staying Competitive in a Changing Environment or Staking Your Claim on the Web (like getting links with linkbait) could similarly be applied to chiropractic businesses, or nearly any other brick-and-mortar business in the United States. The AVN Entertainment Expo site has all the details.
The weekend of January 10th and 11th also features WordCamp:Las Vegas, a two-day event highlighting features, presentations, and open sessions centered around the world’s most popular blogging platform, WordPress (which powers the chiropractic blogs and millions of others across the net). Anybody that blogs should make an effort to attend at least one wordcamp event, as there’s so much to learn and to the community is spectacular.
We’re not done yet, Affiliate Summit West 2009 (ASW) takes place at the Rio All-Suite Hotel & Casino in Las Vegas starting January 11th and goes through January 13th. ASW is the premier affiliate marketing conference of the year, featuring educational sessions, exhibit halls with affiliate merchants and vendors, and even a Monday keynote presentation by the star of Wine Library TV, Gary Vaynerchuk. Just as people are heading out from ASW on the 13th, chiropractors will be arriving on the 15th, for the 2009 Parker Las Vegas Chiropractic Seminar at the Las Vegas Hilton. The three-day chiropractic event is one of the biggest in the industry, and it features continuing education programs, political and business classes, an expo center, and celebrations of chiropractic success and service.

Changes in breast cancer rates, a widening gap in colon cancer death rates amongst blacks versus whites, drug companies using ghost writers, questioning the safety of asthma medication, time for 2009 Medicare decisions, and the immune system a night, those of the health topics for Monday, December 15th, 2008.
Falling Breast Cancer Rates - A new study shows that decreased use of hormone therapy has been correlated with a decline in breast cancer amongst menopausal women. The study showed that the use of menopausal hormone therapy with estrogen and progestin over a five-year period doubled a woman’s risk of breast cancer. According to the study, researchers concluded that discontinued use of E+P (estrogen plus progestin) was associated with rapid reduction in breast cancer incidence. The war on breast cancer continues.

Colon Cancer Death Rates Racial Gap is Widening - According to a new report, the incidence of colon cancer deaths amongst blacks in the U. S., show a widening gap, when compared to death rates amongst whites. According to the study, the gap has been growing since the mid-1970s, when colon cancer deaths for the two groups were near equal. According to the study, the cancer screening rate for whites is 50% versus 40% for blacks. The screening rate is even lower for Hispanics, according to the report.
Drug Company Used Ghostwriters - Congressional investigators continue to probe the practices of a major drug company with concerns that its marketing employees helped write articles for peer-reviewed medical journals. The investigation is led by Iowa Senator Charles Grassley as part of the Senate Finance Committee’s examination of medical ghost writing and larger investigation into the influence pharmaceutical companies have on the health-care industry.
FDA Questions Safety of Asthma Medications - According to a Food and Drug Administration (FDA) panel review, two different asthma medications are considered to pose serious risks that outweigh the benefits of treatment for adults, adolescents and children. GlaxoSmithKline PLC’s Serevent and Novartis AG’s Foradil where the two drugs ruled to pose serious health risks by the FDA panel on Thursday, December 11th. Patients are urged to discuss asthma medication risks versus benefits with their health-care providers.
2009 Medicare Options - The Medicare enrollment period for 2009 is now through New Year’s Eve, and experts are urging seniors consider their overall health needs, when selecting Medicare options. According to health experts, while Medicare decisions are important for seniors every year, this year many seniors will be faced with potentially difficult decisions due to the impact of the economic downturn. One tip offered is to consider ones physicians when choosing a Medicare plan to make sure that the health-care professionals normally seen are included. With a new president in 2009, chiropractic care and Medicare will be interesting to watch, in the upcoming years.
At Night Immune System is Hard at Work - According to a new study performed on fruit flies, the body’s immune system works its hardest at night and eases off on activities during the day. According to researchers, flies infected with bacteria at night had a better chance of surviving compared to those infected during the day. The study results fit the theory that the body uses sleep for restoration and increased energy. The findings will be presented at a American Society for Cell Biology conference this week.
