Project Virgle Launched by Google and Founder of Virgin Group

Monday, March 31st, 2008

by Michael Dorausch, DC

The Founder of Virgin Group, Sir Richard Branson (one of my heros) and Google have announced Project Virgle, for the establishment of a permanent human settlement on Mars.

According to the announcement, which appeared today on The Official Google Blog, the two companies have teamed up to move humanity beyond Earth, and establishing a lasting foothold on the planet Mars.

According to the reports they’ll be sending up a series of spaceships carrying supplies, tools and Mars colonists, or Virgle Pioneers. I’ve already taken the The Adventure of Many Lifetimes exam and I’m ready to go.

I figure all those Virgilists are going to need chiropractic care, especially with that cramped three-month journey from Earth to Mars and a potentially bumpy flight.

Chiropractors Assistant Discovers Thousands in Trash

Monday, March 31st, 2008

by Daria Belov

West Los Angeles: A chiropractors assistant has reportedly discovered a large sum of money that was stuffed into a paper bag and placed inside a trash can located just inside the office’s front door. The El Salvadorian born chiropractic assistant was giddy with excitement when I spoke to her over the phone Monday, about the Sunday evening discovery.

chiropractic assistant discovers thousands in cash(photo: chiropractors assistant laughs as she pulls a handful of hundred dollar bills from the discovered paper bag)

It’s a great day at ADIO Chiropractic exclaimed the voice on the other end of the line. It was the excited and cheerful voice of Rosa Vertega, the 26 year old chiropractors assistant, who had made the fortuitous discovery less than 24 hours prior. I found out about the story while checking RSS feeds on a chiropractor’s e-mail group. The chiropractor from the office posted a seemingly hypothetical question as to what the office should do in the case of discovering a large sum of money. I had a suspicion the situation for real so I quickly called to get more details.

As Rosa explained, trash for the office was being emptied late Sunday evening when the money was discovered. The office is environmentally conscious and maintains several trash cans that are specifically labeled Face Paper Only. According to the office staff, this is so patients don’t mix ordinary trash with the recyclable paper that is used on chiropractic adjusting tables.

The last scheduled time the chiropractic office cared for clients was on Friday, as the office was closed Saturday. Rosa was in the office Sunday evening, along with the chiropractor, wrapping up paperwork for the end of March 2008 and taking care of some minor office cleaning. The discovery was made when the cash stuffed brown paper bag was found mixed in with white face paper destined for the recycle bin.

“I thought someone had accidentally thrown their lunch in the recycle container, since when I felt the bag it had some weight to it” said Rosa. “I opened the bag and was like Oh My God! I quickly looked around to see if someone was playing some sort of joke on me.”

The trashcan where Rosa found the money is located just a few feet from the front door, and the office is part of a very busy shopping center with a lot of walk by foot traffic. She said it’s not the first time someone has put other items in the can intended for paper products only, but there’s never been anything in it like this.

The office typically sees many clients on Fridays and it was initially assumed that the cash belonged to someone visiting the chiropractic practice. Staff spent a good part of Monday morning calling every scheduled person that visited the chiropractors office the previous Friday, asking if they’d lost or left anything in the office. No one has yet reported the money missing.

The bag of cash was placed on a Pitney Bowes postage scale and it reportedly weighed in at over half a pound. While the office would not share how much cash was actually in the sack, I estimated that a bag of that weight, filled primarily with hundred dollar bills, could hold as much as $100,000 or maybe even more.

The funds were turned over to local authorities Monday evening, and Rosa was told that the office could become owners of the cash if no one claimed it within the next 30 days. She said she wants to do the right thing, but she’s more than happy to split the funds with her chiropractic boss, should the opportunity come up. “It’s going to be a crazy April” said the girl with this huge smile on her face…

Preparing for April Fools Day Jokes

Monday, March 31st, 2008

by Michael Dorausch, DC

April Fools’ Day is one day away, and you can expect April Fools’ Day pranks, practical jokes, and other shenanigans coming from a wide variety of sources. There’s the traditional sources for April Fools’ Day gags, such as friends and coworkers, but with the growth of the Internet, and the opportunity for web traffic, don’t be surprised if some big media outlets try playing you for a fool on April 1, 2008.

April Fools’ Day can be a fun time playing jokes on friends and family, but don’t be surprised to see April fools pranks coming from major media sources online, particularly with stories that appear rather outlandish. It can be hard to tell which stories may be pranks or true, especially since there’s so much you’re never going to believe this type of news appearing these days.

Consider news aggregating websites like Truemors (cofounded by Guy Kawasaki), that features stories on a regular basis with titles such as: Python Eats Alligator and Explodes, Smoking Safer Than Cell Phones, Supermarket Selling Stolen Credit Cards, and British Students Create Cat Dentures (note: these were actual recent headlines and none are related to April fools).

With a presidential election approaching this year, there’s no doubt that someone will attempt a political April fools joke, involving news of one of the three (or maybe even all three) presidential hopefuls (Clinton, Obama, McCain). The way things spread so quickly on the Internet, I imagine a politically based April fools prank could result in a sticky situation for the prankster, prankstees, or both.

Were sure to hear about some new Internet service or a new mobile device that features some kind of unbelievable service. I also expect there will be April fools jokes played involving popular social media sites such as Facebook, MySpace, and Digg.

office hires dog as massage therapist(photo: Know of any chiropractic offices that have hired canines to work as massage therapists?)

I don’t know what pranksters have in store for us this April Fools Day, but let’s hope it doesn’t involve anybody getting injured, ill, or put in danger. Pranks using laxatives are caffeine are not uncommon, but they can prove to be dangerous for some individual (especially when mixed with other medications).

This being a chiropractic website, I have to mention that chiropractors are most likely to fall for April Fools’ Day phone calls from their colleagues and patients. I can recall two that have been popular over the years. They both involve calling the chiropractor’s office and scheduling for a new appointment. One involves a sense of urgency as the person calling has “thrown their back out” lifting large sacks of money. The caller wants to know if the office accepts cash for payment (most offices do) which is followed by gratefulness and praise from the caller, since the individual is on their way after just having robbed a local bank.

So on April 1, 2008, watch out for pranks and practical jokes, as the Internet and cell phones become tools used to deliver pranks to unsuspecting fools.

Stop the Drama Vote for Obama

Top 10 Health Professionals Contributing to Federal Candidates and Parties 2008

Saturday, March 29th, 2008

by Michael Dorausch, DC

The war in Iraq, the nation’s economy, and health care, are reportedly the top three concerns for most Americans planning to vote in this years presidential election. The three front running candidates, Hillary Rodham Clinton (D), Barack Obama (D), and John McCain (R), along with their parties, have significantly different philosophies about how to grapple with the issue of health care in the United States. In continuing with our coverage of money in politics and presidential candidates, we take a look today at the top 10 health professionals organizations that are contributing funds to federal candidates and parties for the 2008 election cycle. The list of which organizations are giving (and who’s not giving) may come as a surprise to some.

top contributors to federal candidates and parties 2008(photo: a screenshot for the 2008 election cycle, which shows total contributions of $34,406,008.00, with 53% of that funding going to Democrats.)

Todays look at health-care money in politics focuses on the top 10 contributing healthcare organizations providing funding to federal candidates and parties for the 2008 election cycle. The list is ranked from number 1 through number 10, with number one being the organization that has contributed the most funds towards this year’s election cycle. The list is followed by a screenshot showing the amounts given by each group, which includes distribution percentages amongst Democrats and Republicans.

Health Professionals: Top Contributors to Federal Candidates and Parties
Election cycle: 2008
Total contributions: $34,406,008

1) American Dental Association
2) American College of Radiology
3) American Society of Anesthesiologists
4) American Optometric Association
5) American Physical Therapy Association
6) American College of Emergency Physicians
7) American Association of Orthopaedic Surgeons
8) American Association of Nurse Anesthetists
9) American College of Cardiology
10) American Academy of Ophthalmology

Rank - Organization - Amount - Democrats - Republicans

The American Dental Association currently holds the number one ranking for contributed funds, which have been equally distributed amongst both Democratic and Republican parties. The American Optometric Association, which ranks at number four, stands out among the list of organizations in the top 10, as overwhelmingly funding Democrats. Two other health-care organizations showing a considerably less than 50-50 split amongst parties are the American College of Emergency Physicians (62% vs. 38%) and the American College of Cardiology (61% vs. 39%).

Interestingly, the American Medical Association does not make the top 10 list of contributors, they are currently ranked at number 15, with an equal distribution amongst both Democrats and Republicans. While the industry of chiropractic did not make the list of top 20 contributors, the American Chiropractic Association currently shows significant support for Democrats over Republicans (63% vs. 37%). Not a single health care association or organization currently shows funding to the Republican Party in excess of 51% of total contributions (the American Physical Therapy Association is the only organization showing a two percentage point in favor of Republicans).

The numbers listed are only a reflection of what data is available today. Information will change throughout this year’s election cycle, but you should be able to access the most recent data on top contributors among healthcare professionals on this fund reporting page.

Methodology of Collecting Data: The numbers provided are based on contributions from Political Action Committees (PACs), soft money donors, and individuals giving $200 or more. (Only those groups giving $5,000 or more are listed here.) In many cases, the organizations themselves did not donate; rather the money came from the organization’s PAC, its individual members or employees or owners, and those individuals’ immediate families. Organization totals include subsidiaries and affiliates. All donations reportedly took place during the 2007-2008 election cycle and were released by the Federal Election Commission on Monday, March 03, 2008. Nerds Are Taking over Hollywood and Santa Monica

Friday, March 28th, 2008

by Michael Dorausch, DC
There was a time that I would party five nights a week (Cat Club, Coconut Teaser, The Rainbow, The Troubadour, and The Whiskey) with friends in the clubs of Hollywood. I refer to those times as the rock ‘n roll years. It’s funny how things change, but continue to remain the same, [...]

Web-based Photoshop Express Opens to Public

Thursday, March 27th, 2008

by Michael Dorausch, DC

Adobe Systems opened Photoshop Express early this morning, a much-anticipated web-based image editor intended for a market of consumers that want to store, share, and edit photographs online. The web-based service, was made available with 2 GB of free storage, and offers users the opportunity to create a subdomain on photoshop.com, when creating one’s free user account.

I woke up early Thursday morning to the news that the service had been made available to the public and I visited the site for a chance to register on the day of launch. After filling out the required information I was provided with this user profile: chiropractic.photoshop.com. I uploaded some photographs of my two yellow Labradors and later in the day added some photos from my chiropractic office in Los Angeles.

The web-based app, requires Adobes Flash Player 9 in order to function, and my early experience with the site has me simply amazed with the ease of use, smoothness when uploading photographs, and beautiful display of the full-screen slide show. Below is a screenshot from my recently created chiropractic user page.

Some of the features I’ve tested so far include creating Gallery albums, uploading photos, viewing slideshows (in both browser mode and full-screen), linking to images, embedding images (see below), making modifications to my profile, and browsing the photographic works of other members on the website.

As a consumer that uploads a considerable amount of photo content on a regular basis, this new service from Adobe could not have come at a better time. We’ve just started posting flash based chiropractic office slideshows to this websites blog, but there are reportedly some viewing errors for users of Internet Explorer. It looks like this online Photoshop application to provide another way to share embedded slideshows with web site visitors.

Below is the first example I have of content embedded from the Photoshop Express website. I’m planning to add a number of slideshows featuring chiropractic offices across America, those posts will likely be shared in our photos section of the blog.

ADIO Office

No doubt there will be lots of news related to this new service from Adobe, I’m already a big fan.
