Continuing Education Seminars February and March 2008

Saturday, February 23rd, 2008

by Daria Belov

February 2008 is nearly complete but chiropractic events and conferences are continuing throughout the month, with many upcoming seminars in the month of March, April, and May. Whether you are seeking chiropractic seminars in the sun, state relicensing information, or a conference that will help you get your continuing education credits for technique and maybe even x-ray, there’s an upcoming chiropractic program that’s got your back.

Today I am sharing a brief list of upcoming events and chiropractic seminars that I found listed in the Planet Chiropractic events database. Some offer continuing education credits and others don’t, so be sure to check with educational sources if you’re seeking continuing education for your state licensure.

Dr. Fred Schofield continues his weekend educational program for the 2008 Rugby Sunshine Tour until tomorrow. The event is approved for 12 hours of educational credits through Palmer Chiropractic College in Davenport Iowa. This event is held each year in support of the Palmer Rugby Club.

One of the hidden benefits of attending chiropractic conferences is the opportunity to spend quality one-on-one time with colleagues. There’s so much that goes on during session breaks, lunches with friends, and group dinners, that’s far too often underrated. Some of the best answers come from just spending time with one another.

The very much-anticipated ICA Fitness Symposium and the The Arnold Sports Festival, featuring California Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger, kicks off on February 29th, and runs through March 2, 2008. The event is held at the Columbus Hotel in Ohio, and it features a dazzling number of health care experts and fitness professionals.

Christina Lindley, Sandra Peebles, and Staci Boyer have been added to the schedule and will be sharing their expertise as guest presenters with Dr. Jack Barnathan and Dr. Richard Gennaro, speaking on coordinating patient care with personal trainers and other exercise professionals at the 2008 ICA Fitness Symposium program.

For those of you seeking a warm weather seminar, Schofield Chiropractic Training is hosting a Saturday conference in Deerfield Beach Florida on March 8, 2008. The event is geared towards chiropractors intent on setting attainable goals for a successful life and practice. This one-day event provides attendees with tools that they can put into action on Monday morning.

Southern California is home to the ICAC Spring Convention on March 14, 15 and 16. Event is being held at the Orange County Airport Holiday Inn, located in Costa Mesa, California. Event is expected to offer 12 hours of continuing education credits, which include x-ray and technique hours. Contact in the ICA of California for more details.

Dr. Michael Dorausch authored some basic information about Chiropractic Continuing Education which appears in the seminars category of the chiropractic blog pages.

Bakersfield Chiropractor Scores with Kid Video

Monday, February 18th, 2008

by Michael Dorausch, DC

There’s something about excited and likable kids that gets our attention in advertising. They come across so innocent and often times just tell it like it is. I know one Bakersfield father that’s pretty impressed with the results of an online video, which features one of his three daughters talking about the benefits of chiropractic care, and how her dad is the greatest.

Kalie Ryan says that her dad is the best chiropractor in Bakersfield (photo: screenshot of Kalie Ryan, daughter of Bakersfield chiropractor, Dr. Jim Ryan)

According to Kalie Ryan, her dad is the best chiropractor in Bakersfield, at least that’s what she told me when I spoke to her in August 2007, while her family was attending a chiropractic conference in Phoenix, Arizona.

I was attending the three-day chiropractic event, taking pictures and talking to chiropractors, and creating content for the Planet Chiropractic web site. The hallways were full of children playing games, while their parents sat inside the conference room and listened to event lecturers.

I was in the hallway, testing out the video features on my Casio Exlim digital camera, when I had the idea to ask some of the kids questions about chiropractic. What was initially a video that would never leave my SD card, ended up getting posted to a video sharing site for friends and family to view. It wasn’t until this weekend that I discovered Dr. Jim Ryan was getting new patients from people viewing the video, and it motivated me to develop this article.

Nothing was rehearsed, and if you’ve already watched the video you can tell it’s not of high quality. I wasn’t even using a video camera, just a digital camera that had minor video capabilities. But there’s something very key about this video that makes it work. Yes it has a cute kid, and she talks highly of her dad, and his chiropractic practice.

She says a lot of her friends go to her dad’s office, she says he’s been in practice for a long time, she recommends him for adults, and answers yes to being asked if he is gentle with his chiropractic care (and he gets good results), but the key thing (that had me pleasantly surprised) was that young Kalie knew the phone number to her dads chiropractic office.

When I asked her do you know the phone number to the office? she excitedly answered… yeah, it’s 661-589-3427. Without having mentioned that, I doubt we would have ever heard that Dr. James Ryan was getting calls from new patients as a result of Kalie’s interview. Amazing, since Dr. Jim doesn’t even have a chiropractic website.

For those of you interested, here’s Kalie’s dads office information…

Price Listed in Online Contextual Ads

Sunday, February 17th, 2008

by Daria Belov

Knowing the cost of a first chiropractic visit is certainly something a consumer may like to have information of, especially when not relying on health insurance for reimbursement. Beyond that first visit, consumers often times want to know the fees associated with follow-up visits for chiropractic care and any potentially related services. You may think chiropractors would be quick to post prices in their online ads but I discovered that was rarely the case. A review was performed of various contextual ads that included price information for chiropractor offices in different parts of the United States. Here is what I found.

$27 X-Ray and Spinal Examination (photo: X-Ray of cervical spine)

I performed a review of more than 150 chiropractic centered contextual ads appearing alongside search results. Search queries were made using various combinations of city terms matched with the word chiropractor (or chiropractic). Queries were made for citeis in New York, New Jersey, Florida, Colorado, Ohio, Massachusetts, Pennsylvania, Nevada, Texas, Iowa, Idaho, Arizona, and California. Out of those search queries, only six return results that included pricing.

Screenshots were made of the individual ads, which were combined into a single image seen below (it’s not some new kind of mega adsense box). Web site and other identifiable information was smudged out as the intent of this post was not to draw attention to specific businesses displaying price in advertising.

price in chiropractic advertising

Prices for the six displayed advertisements ranged from $27 to $57. The lowest priced ad ($27 complete chiropractic exam and x-rays) was for an office located in San Diego, California. Three of the advertisements listed exam and x-rays for a fixed price ($27, $57, $40). One of the advertisements displayed $45 for a chiro treatment. The ad is not specific whether that is for a chiropractic adjustment or for some form of therapy. Two of the advertisements are unclear ($50 1st Visit and Internet Special $49) as to what’s included in the price. Those fees may be for consultation only, and it’s difficult to say if they include any form of chiropractic examination or care.

States that had chiropractors display pricing information included California, Texas, Nevada, and Massachusetts. Three of the six advertisements displayed were for practices in the state of California. Kearny Mesa is in San Diego County, just south of the Miramar Marine Corp. Air Station, and north of Qualcomm Stadium.

Chiropractic State Boards may have guidelines determining whether chiropractors can include pricing information when displaying advertisements, and those guidelines may not be clear as to what is permitted on the web. Chiropractors planning on purchasing internet based contextual advertising are advised to check with state regulatory agencies to avoid any undesired attention.

If you spot text based advertisements that display price information for exams, x-rays, adjustments, first visits, and other services, see if you can grab a screenshot of the advertisement, or remember the city and state the ad was listed in. Forward your information onto us (our e-mail is in the yellow envelope at the top of this post) and we may include it in a follow-up article that shows broader city and state coverage.

ICA to hold National Conference on Chiropractic in Medicare

Thursday, February 14th, 2008

ICA News Release

National Conference on Chiropractic in Medicare to be held in Washington, DC

A national conference focusing on the future of chiropractic in the federal Medicare program will be hosted by the International Chiropractors Association (ICA) in Washington, DC on Thursday, April 24, 2008, with all organizations within the chiropractic profession invited to participate. The objectives of this day-long, Medicare forum will be to focus the attention of the chiropractic profession on this struggling but vital program, and foster a positive dialogue on how chiropractic’s vital role in Medicare can be strengthened. Taking the place of the traditional ICA Legislative Work Day, this conference will seek to incorporate the broadest possible representation from within the profession, in a spirit of collective problem solving equal to the challenges and demands of the complex Medicare issue. “ICA is seeking to use its pre-planned dates and program to support a greater outreach on the Medicare issue, and to incorporate those other organizations that have recently started to organize to build a common effort on the key issues facing the profession,” said ICA President Dr. John K. Maltby. “We believe that this is vital to our future and the right thing to do.”

Capitol Hill - Washington, DCThis intensive one-day event will involve representatives of numerous chiropractic organizations, senior members of the US House and Senate, spokespeople from national seniors’ organizations and representatives of allied health care professions facing similar challenges in the Medicare program. “By April 2008, the Congressional legislative agenda will be largely on hold, with political attention heavily focused on the race for President in both parties and the November general elections,” said ICA Legislative Committee Co-Chair Dr. Michael S. McLean. “Because of its pivotal role in the 2008 campaigns for all federal offices, ICA believes that this is a most opportune time to hold a focused discussion on the host of issues critical to chiropractic and chiropractic patients in Medicare, and on the health of that massive program, in general. ICA hopes that this historic session will help craft a profession-wide awareness of the urgent need for Medicare reform, and of chiropractic’s unique and positive role in helping the nation’s seniors.”

ICA has invited senior members of the Finance Committee of the US Senate and the US House Committee on Ways and Means, the congressional committees with jurisdiction over the Medicare program, representatives of the key Presidential candidates to offer their respective predictions and reform concepts for Medicare, as well as answer specific questions on chiropractic’s Medicare role. ICA has also invited representatives of the National Committee to Preserve Social Security and Medicare and the American Association of Retired Persons (AARP) to present their insights on Medicare’s future, and how we can cooperate to strengthen patients’ rights and choices, as well as the general viability of the program.

The program will include panels on Chiropractic’s Practice Challenges in Medicare, Chiropractic’s Political Challenges in Medicare, and an all-important panel discussion on coordinating a collective chiropractic response on Medicare challenges and opportunities.

“ICA will also be inviting the legislative committees of every state and national chiropractic organization in the country to a special forum on the morning of April 24th at which the mechanics of political action and communications coordination will be discussed, along with other cooperative initiatives that are vital to success on the Medicare issue, as well as other national political and legislative issues,” said ICA Legislative Committee Co-Chair Dr. Michael S. McLean.

“ICA hopes that this unique conference will assist in bringing the entire chiropractic profession together in a discussion that will result in consensus on what needs to be done and how the important work on Medicare is to be accomplished,” said ICA President Dr. John K. Maltby. “Everyone in the profession is not only welcome at this conference, they are needed and wanted, because we understand that it will take all of us, working in an historic collective effort, to secure for chiropractic the role it deserves in caring for our senior citizens.”

Additional details and registration information will be made available on ICA’s website at www.chiropractic.org. The April 24th event will be held at the Washington Court Hotel, conveniently located near Capitol Hill at 525 New Jersey Avenue, NW Washington, DC.

Mixed Valentine’s Day Messages

Wednesday, February 13th, 2008

by Michael Dorausch, DC

Start looking for love on this chiropractic website, and you’re bound to find many topics. Earlier last week, the staff, and I were going through Valentine’s Day posts from previous years, and doing some searches for topics related to a love for chiropractic, and/or love for life. Many heartwarming messages were discovered amongst the millions of 0s and 1s of data stashed away in our news archives. Here’s a brief collection of articles from years past that touch on these topics.

bronze statue with dove (photo: a bronze statue of a dove being released into the sky - taken in Mexico)

Earlier this week we had a post that featured 5 Valentines Day Ideas Your Chiropractor Will Love. After speaking to numerous women today, I discovered that chocolate (the good stuff) is still high and list of desired indulgences for Valentines.

Last week there was a brief review of love and service content, which resulted in the creation of Chiropractors are Great Lovers of Life, a post full of links to some great archived articles.

There were more articles found, such as the February 14, 2001 post titled: A Valentines Message For You, which features valentines messages from 16 chiropractors, including ones like this…

I chose Chiropractic for the money. Soon I figured out that Chiropractic chose me. Then I figured out that I was really helping people for love, not money. I was shown by some of the most successful Chiropractors that if you take care of your patients, they in turn take care of you. It is a universal law. What you give you will receive back many times.

Maybe if the colleges would accept students on their love for humanity instead of love for financial success there would be no question to the outside world about what Chiropractic is about. - Dr. Robert Ciprian

This chiropractic love letter, Let Me Count The Ways, was authored by a chiropractic assistant in Canada, and it was first published on February 14, 2002.

While this next post came from the month of November 2001, it was authored by a lover of all things lovable. Dr. Stew Bittman and his message to My Fellow Lovers of Chiropractic is just as fitting today as it was nearly 6 1/2 years ago.

Dr. Sharon Gorman of Pennsylvania authored a post in December of 2003 that suggests chiropractors should Love Your Chiropractic Life.

Dream what the life of your dreams would look like. What is your purpose? Are your living your purpose today? Realize that you have choices concerning how your life turns out yet realize that you are not in charge.

All the way back to August of 2001 I discovered a post of all the things one Idaho chiropractor, Dr. Madeline Behrendt, loved about chiropractic. The post was simply titled LOVE, and it includes lovable things like tableface, Cash practice, Spizz, and the Adjustment.

Another fitting post from Dr. Sharon Gorman in 2003, Love-A-Monday-Morning-Message, talks about love and relationships, and being an open vessel of God’s love.

I even found a mushy Valentines 2001 article authored by Yours truly. The post, It’s All About The Love talks about Valentine’s Day being a day of love, and how every other day should be like it.

Then there is another post from Sharon Gorman about Taking Care of (Chiropractic) Business. She states: Wouldn’t it be nice if we could go into our chiropractic office and love, serve and give all day without dealing with insurance companies and taking care of some difficult patients and having to manage the business part of your office. Yes yes yes!

Sharon continues… I find the loving, serving and giving to be the easy part. The trick is to be able to deal with all the other parts and still feel like being a loving, giving and serving kind of person. A spectacular post!

All the best to you, and may you enjoy a Valentine’s Day 2008 you’ll never forget.
