Nike Women’s Marathon San Francisco

Saturday, October 20th, 2007

by Daria Belov

San Francisco: Massive crowds gathered today in San Francisco’s Union Square district in preperation for Sundays October 21st Nike Women’s Marathon. Thousands of women were getting registered, receiving foot massages, back rubs, pedicures, and getting treated to beverages such as Jamba Juice smoothies.

Union Square was transformed into registration central, with a pre-race Nike Expotique, as women from around the country arrived to register and enjoy the day before race events. One apparently excited male tourist was overheard exclaiming the area had become [edited] central as fit 30-something women were everywhere one turned. Throughout the day women got registered, shopped, received foot massages, spinal rubdowns and pedicures, listened to motivational talks, and enjoyed a spectacular day in the city of San Fransisco.

Niketown on Post Street was a sea of pink with long lines of shoppers purchasing the latest running fashions and stocking up on other fitness related gear. No doubt, staff at the megastore had their work cut out for them. Outside the store people gathered to pose for photographs as the store posted registered marathoner names along their windows.

It will be a weekend to remember for many as weather is expected to be beautiful for running, with many scenic views of the city and the bay area. There is an on-course chocolate mile, and one official finisher will receive a necklace by Tiffany & Co. There is even a pedi-care station for those that want to indulge themselves midway.

Registration for the marathon is sold out. Expected race time is Sunday at 7am.

A big shout out from Planet Chiropractic to chiropractors Carolyn Griffin, Steve Hansen, George Khoury, and Russell Kun for working to get women in their offices prepared chiropractically for Sundays event.

Massage Chairs and Mattresses

by Michael Dorausch, DC
The mail keeps coming. I often wonder if other chiropractic offices receive as much mail as I do. I have to assume that they do. For such a small industry, it’s amazing how much marketing material and product advertising letters and postcards chiropractic offices receive each day. Today alone, I received no [...]

Among the postcards and faxes I received in my chiropractic office yesterday were three pieces of information for upcoming seminars and events directed at health-care professionals. I received a postcard from the National Association of Certified National Health Professionals (try saying that real fast) with information about an event that’s going to [...]

Pumpkin Contests and Halloween Decoration Ideas

Wednesday, October 17th, 2007

by Michael Dorausch, DC

Not all chiropractic offices decorate or celebrate during the time of Halloween. Our chiropractic office in the beach cities of Los Angeles has been decorated with different themes year after year. We used to have candy guessing contests but this year we’ve moved away from the sugary sweets and are focusing more on a theme for the day. This year our patients will be welcomed to the Ninja Chiropractic Center on the day of October 31st and we are expecting to have loads of fun. That’s what we will be up to, here’s what a few other chiropractic offices are doing in their part of the world.

pumpkin head with medication and syringesDr. Ken Gee Ehrlich of Santa Monica writes… What we are doing for halloween is a mini pumpkin decorating contest. I get some cool prizes like a stereo system for 1st place and some other cool stuff for 2nd and 3rd. I buy about 50 mini pumpkins and let the patients take them home and decorate them and bring them back on the week before halloween. On halloween the patients vote for their favorite. The photo is from last years winner and her pumpkin on medications. That was her before she came to see me.

Dr. Danita Thomas Heagy in St. Augustine Florida writes… As far as Halloween, we have often dressed up, decorated the office or varying degrees of “party” atmosphere. Some of my arachnophobia patients have taught me to keep out the spider webs if I want them to be adjusted during the month of October, and some of my (less observant) patients missed that I was even in costume. It is a great fun way to teach patients.

Donna Moore from Redding California writes… We encourage patients to limit the amount of candy their kids consume after Halloween. We suggest they let the child pick out 6 favorite pieces to enjoy the next week, then trade the rest (often a big bag) and go to the store to pick out a special toy instead. The children are happy with a new toy and the parents are happy with less sickness following the sugar high the following week. What to do with the left over bag? Take it to a local homeless shelter, or put it in the garbage!

In the office, we go to the local health food store and get a sugar-free candy to pass out. Patients who come in wearing a costume often get a picture with the doctor to go up on our photo board. These pictures bring smiles for years to come.

Our holiday decorations focus on the “Fall” theme so as not to offend patients who do not participate in this holiday.

Spoil Those Bird Dogs In Your Small Business

Tuesday, October 16th, 2007

by Michael Dorausch, DC

Are you spoiling the bird dogs in your small business?

There’s nothing like having a loyal dog in your family. Dogs such as Labrador retrievers seem to experience great joy in just bringing you stuff. They don’t bring you a dead bird for instance, leaving it on the front porch for your discovery, and expect anything in return. They instinctively practice random acts of kindness (not so kind for the bird or in my neighborhood’s case possums) and continue to deliver treasures from around the neighborhood on a regular basis.

spoiled bird dog(photo: my yellow Labrador even has her own economically correct cervical pillow)

The other day I was speaking to a colleague of mine, Dr. Fred Schofield, who practices in Phoenix, and we were having a discussion about gratitude and gratefulness for the people that have referred others over the years into our chiropractic businesses. Both Dr. Fred and I have had Labrador retrievers in our families for many years so he used the analogy of one of his old “bird dogs” in describing to me how he felt about his patients that refer. I love my dogs, and I would do anything for them, so this analogy stuck, and I wanted to share it with you.

Dr. Schofield talked about recognition, appreciation, and approval. We recognize our dogs are doing what they do based on an innate sense they’ve developed over generations. We show them appreciation for their acts of kindness, and they continue the behavior, further seeking our approval of their actions. We again show recognition and appreciation, and the cycle continues.

I’m not suggesting you refer to those that send you new business as “bird dogs” but I still like the analogy. For those that are dog lovers, giving that same energy and spirit to the people in your small business community, is quite a compliment. We love when people refer us new business but do we give them the same recognition and appreciation as we would our favorite furry friends? I know I could do a better job of spoiling them with treats (not the dogs but the people), showing gratitude and appreciation, and recognizing that often what they are doing, they are doing out of an innate sense of giving back to those that care for them. People don’t make referrals to small businesses and then think… “you owe me now buster”, they make referrals out of appreciation for the services you provide.

The next time someone in your small business shows up with a family member or friend, and wants to introduce them to your products or services, don’t forget my friend Fred’s bird dog principle. Recognize their actions are based upon love and respect, so go that extra mile to show your gratitude and appreciation.

California Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger Vetoes Senate Bill 801

Tuesday, October 16th, 2007

by ICA News

California Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger has stepped forward on behalf of sound public policy and acted in the best interests of the chiropractic profession and the public by vetoing the dangerous and disruptive Senate Bill 801. This legislation would have dramatically revised the way in which the chiropractic profession is regulated in the nation’s largest state, and would have placed a measure on the June 2008 election ballot for consideration by statewide voters, with election costs funded by the state’s chiropractic licensing fees. This election ballot measure, if it had not been vetoed by the Governor, would have required a massive expenditure of time, effort and resources on the part of the chiropractic profession to defeat.

ICA was informed by the Governor’s office of his veto action moments after it was made official. In his formal veto message, Governor Schwarzenegger stated:

California Governor Arnold SchwarzeneggerTo the Members of the California State Senate: I am returning Senate Bill 801 without my signature. This bill would bring the Board of Chiropractic Examiners under the auspices of the Department of Consumer Affairs, pending approval by California’s voters on the June 2008 ballot.

The Board of Chiropractic Examiners is currently working with the Department of Consumer Affairs to provide essential support services and correct any prior deficiencies. I do not feel it is necessary at this time to go through the expense of placing this measure on the ballot to essentially codify existing practice. I also do not support requiring the profession’s licensing fees to pay for the costs of placing this measure on the ballot.

Sincerely,

Arnold Schwarzenegger

“The chiropractic profession and the public have been very well served by the Governor’s veto,” said ICA President Dr. John Maltby, himself a California resident who has been personally active and involved in this issue with the Governor and his staff. “There are no circumstances under which this legislation could be viewed as anything but against the best interests of consumers and chiropractors alike,” said Dr. Maltby. “It has been clearly politically motivated as a vehicle to attack the Governor and his Administration, in the worst, most mean spirited and partisan manner, and we deeply appreciate the Governor’s courageous action by vetoing this measure.”

Chiropractic’s traditional critics and competitors have attempted to use this issue as a means of discrediting the California Chiropractic Board and the profession at large, even as that very Board has acted dramatically to clean up a longstanding pattern of abuse and misdirection that has needlessly, arbitrarily and grievously harmed practitioners and consumers alike. It is clear that those same critics and competitors would have invested heavily in an election battle, mobilizing the massively deep pockets of the insurance industry and other adversarial interests, to strip chiropractic of the unique and independent status California voters gave the chiropractic profession many years ago.

“Chiropractic is stronger today because of the Governor’s wise and appropriate action on SB 801,” said Dr. Maltby. “ICA hopes that the chiropractic profession in California can move on, and focus on providing quality and timely patient care to the millions who need chiropractic so much, but we know that the realm of health care will remain a complex and highly competitive arena. It is certain that similar issues will surface in the future, and ICA has every confidence that Governor Schwarzenegger will continue to do the right thing for the people of our great state.”

Halloween Candy for Chiropractors

Monday, October 15th, 2007

by Michael Dorausch, DC

The idea of candy eating chiropractors is not one that would be very popular for a number of reasons. When it comes to eating and chiropractic, it’s more likely for you to hear your chiropractor speak of Sun Chlorella, Super Greens, Mangosteen Juice, or some other product loaded with phytonutrients, probiotics, and/or immune boosting nutrients. We can get back on that topic in November, when it’s time to give thanks for all the great foods nature brings us. This month is Candy month, and this past weekend I interviewed a group of chiropractors to discover what their favorite candies were. I don’t think I’ve ever seen any of these DCs eat the sugary stuff, but now we know they’ve got a liking for sweets.

While he may be grabbing for the Hawaiian Spirulina at breakfast, Tracy California chiropractor, Dr. Ralph Andrade, likes the Snickers bar, a combination of peanut butter nougat topped with roasted peanuts and caramel covered with milk chocolate. The Snickers bar is reportedly the best-selling candy bar in the United States.

M&Ms chocolate yellow blue red orangeDr. Gavin Carr is a California chiropractor practicing in Palo Alto. The former professional football player prefers those candy coated pieces of chocolate, known popularly as M&M’s. These candies make a convenient snack for the chiropractor that is moving from room to room, correcting vertebral subluxations. Wouldn’t want your doctor of chiropractic getting chocolate all over your neck now would you?

The Cincinnati kid, Dr. Carl Rafey, is a nut for the Hershey’s classic Almond Joy chocolate bar. Making sure he’s getting a serving of nuts and fruit, this chiropractor opts for this treat of almonds and sweetened coconut which is dipped in chocolate. Almond Joys have been sold in the United States since 1946.

Pasadena chiropractor, Michael DeNapoli, told me he liked dark chocolate but he did not mention a brand. Knowing Michael he was likely being smart and considering his health since researchers say eating small amounts of dark chocolate every day can be good for your heart. I had a chiropractic & chocolate related article posted earlier this year and if you need to get a visual on some delectable dark chocolate, check out this dark chocolate image search.

Another chiropractor that didn’t tell me a brand of candy was Dr. Luke Cohen who practices in the Pacific Palisades area of southern California. Dr. Luke’s reported favorite was black licorice, and there are many different kinds. There are black licorice twists, soft black licorice, black licorice sticks, black licorice wheels, traditional and gourmet black licorice, and the classic Good & Plenty candy, which is reportedly the oldest branded candy sold in the United States. This soft and chewy licorice candy was first produced in Philadelphia in 1893 and its possible the same kind of candy liked by Luke Cohen, could have also been a favorite of the founder of chiropractic, Dr. DD Palmer.

One of the healthiest and most nutrition minded chiropractors I know, Dr. George Khoury of Livermore, California, says when it comes to getting a load of sugar, there’s nothing like a Butterfinger. This flaky, orange colored candy coated in chocolate, crumbles easily and takes on the consistency of peanut butter when chewed. This candy bar was invented in Chicago, Illinois back in 1923. Around that time, the Butterfinger candy bar was reportedly dropped from airplanes in cities across the United States, to help increase its popularity. Could you imagine anyone doing a similar kind of advertising campaign today?

Well there you have it, some history on popular candies in the United States, and the chiropractors that love them. I’m not suggesting you go out and purchase candies for your favorite local chiropractor, even though I bet quite a few would not turn down the gift of a sweet treat during the Halloween season.
