Adderall Drug Controversy Continues
Wednesday, March 28th, 2007Controversy surrounding the prescription stimulant medication Adderall has been in the press frequently this past week.
Adderall, a prescription amphetamine, typically prescribed for children and adults with ADHD, is becoming more popular for its off label uses. Among the many side effects for those taking Adderall, a decrease in appetite, insomnia, increased anxiety and irritability are all potentials.
pills pills pillsMany college students in the United States are well aware of Adderall’s recreational use. The potent brain stimulant has become popular for exam taking with some college kids apparently believing the drug will help them better concentrate and prepare for tests. There has long been controversy around the stimulants “cocaine like” affects on the body and health-care officials have warned against its use in anything other than its prescribed category.
Most of the news in the press lately has been around the actions of an Illinois medical doctor who reportedly has been prescribing Adderall to more than 800 overweight children and teenagers in order to get them to lose weight. According to news reports, the medical doctor has had great success with his patients losing weight while taking the drug, even though none were diagnosed with ADHD.
According to news reports, the effects of Adderall on non-ADHD patients have not been studied. Taking Adderall for weight loss seems like a rather radical and short-term solution to many critics. What about the long-term effects on the brain and neurotransmitters? Does popping pills provide one an easy out to changing nutritional habits and seeking a more healthy lifestyle? Are there other potentially life-threatening effects that have not surfaced yet?

It is being posted here to Planet Chiropractic in an effort to get more chiropractors worldwide informed as to what’s happening in the state of Connecticut. Connecticut Chiropractic Council LogoAs some of you may already know, the Connecticut Chiropractic Council received a letter from American Specialty Health Networks, Inc. (ASH), alleging that the CCC has been involved in improper activities aimed at undermining ASH’s recruitment of DC’s under its service contract with Anthem Blue Cross and Blue Shield. In addition, the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) has advised the CCC that it has commenced an investigation into the same or similar subject matter. We do not know whether the investigation is a result of a complaint by ASH. In any event, the FTC has already made a request for the CCC, and some of the CCC’s members, to provide the FTC with a significant amount of documents and information regarding ASH’s campaign in Connecticut.
While the CCC denies the allegations made by ASH and does not believe that it has engaged in any wrongdoing, it has become necessary to raise money quickly to pay for the CCC’s legal fees so that it can protect the interests of the CCC and its members. Please send your contributions to the CCC’s Executive Director, Tom Paterna. If you have any questions, call Tom at (203) 410-1692.
HPV vaccine: risks, informed consent and a chiropractic miracle
Thursday, March 22nd, 2007I attended elementary school way back in the early 1960s. Things were different back then, we only had black and white television, and there were only three channels to watch on TV. We were also only given 3 vaccines that I recall. There was one smallpox and a couple of polio vaccines, one live and one dead.
It was during the cold war. Duck and cover drills were routine so we would be ready to survive a Russian nuclear attack at a moment’s notice. When the bell was rung in a certain pattern, everyone jumped under a desk or crouched in a doorway with their eyes shut tight, except for the unlucky curtain monitors who first had to pull the curtains closed to protect the rest of us from the blast.
vaccine preparationWe have thoroughly redefined what protection means in the past 35 years. Instead of just 3 vaccine doses, kids are urged to get 56. Which brings us to the new human papillomavirus (HPV) vaccine, for girls only (so far).
It is truly a first for several reasons, the first vaccine said to fight cancer, the most expensive vaccine ever sold, and the most heavily promoted vaccine ever in history. The HPV vaccine is also racing to the top of the federal charts that tally the number of reported adverse reactions.
